Up to 257 students of Padjadjaran University (Unpad) in Bandung, most of them female, are reportedly involved in the outlawed Islamic State of Indonesia (NII) movement. The figure was revealed at a discussion in Bandung on the weekend, involving Unpad Muslim activists and the Indonesian Ulema and Ummah Forum (FUUI). However, Unpad officials denied that it was true. “Unpad has indeed been contaminated [by the NII movement], but as for the figure, it is still being investigated,” said Iman Soleh, a lecturer at Unpad’s School of Social and Political Sciences. The Unpad rectorate has asked dean assistants at all of its schools to gather information regarding students allegedly involved in the movement, but no reports have been submitted so far, Iman said Tuesday, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com. In its effort to reveal possible student involvement in the movement, Unpad would pay closer attention to students who were suddenly having difficulty paying tuition fees, who were often absent from classes, or whose academic records had shown a sudden slide, Iman said.
